The
Problem
Using coal as a fuel for cooking is a common practice in many parts of India. This practice has serious health & environmental consequences. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide which is emitted through coal burning causes respiratory illnesses and lung diseases
In Bada Akhara, situated in Maihar Tehsil in Madhya Pradesh, more than 100 students reside and study Vedic scriptures. As a part of teaching, the students in Bada Akhara take on various responsibilities, including cooking meals for everyone and maintenance of the campus. The kitchen utilized coal as a fuel for cooking, with approximately 100 kilograms of coal being consumed daily. Unfortunately, the use of coal for cooking on chullah contributed to indoor air pollution, emitting black carbon and particulate matter that have detrimental health effects.
Solution
To mitigate the hazardous environmental and health effects of coal burning activity during cooking in Bada Akhara, a biogas plant & use of biogas as the primary fuel for environment-friendly way of cooking was introduced. Biogas is also more economical and less time-consuming as compared to coal.
The project involved constructing a biogas digestor within the campus premises. Additionally, a gas purification and pressure regulating system was installed to ensure the quality of the gas. A pipeline of approximately 200 meters was laid out to deliver the gas directly to the kitchen.
